21st-Mar-2008 09:29 pm - After Birth, NICU?
I'm curious if anyone that posts to or reads this community has been on medications for Bipolar Disorder throughout their pregnancy, and whether their newborns were monitored in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit / Special Care Nursery. I met with a neonatologist this past week to go over the possibilities after birth, regarding the effects of my medication on my newborn baby girl.

I guess I'm just looking to hear about other peoples' experiences.
11th-Feb-2008 06:43 pm - Adoption agencies
A few people have suggested getting around the genetics/childbirth issues by adopting.

Are there agencies willing to adopt children to people with mental disorders? Do adoption agencies even ask about your health status?

ETA: Does it make a difference whether you're trying to do a domestic or international adoption?
10th-Feb-2008 06:33 am - Mod question
Is there anything you would like to see added to the list of "interests" on the profile page for this community? I'm especially curious about antidepressants, since I haven't been on any since being diagnosed as bipolar (nearly a decade ago!) and don't know what's in use today.

Suggest away! All suggestions will be taken.
Medication can interfere with the healthy development of the fetus and be expressed in breast milk. Some people choose to go off their medication in order to safeguard their child. Other people stay on their medication for their own sake, knowing the risks.

Did you take medication during and/or after your pregnancy? If you do/did not take medication during pregnancy or post-childbirth, what effect did that have on your mental health? If you take (or plan to take) medicine post-childbirth, was your child born healthy? Do you breastfeed,  formula-feed, or some combination of the two?
9th-Feb-2008 11:53 am - Introduce yourself
Welcome to bp_parents. This community was created to fill a niche. Regardless of whether you are already a parent or are considering whether to start a family, this community is for you.

Introduce yourself, say hi, and meet others in your situation. My hope is that this community becomes a good place to come to talk to people facing the same issues and challenges as you.
